I am too tired to write some code/ write about code, but I had a discussion about figures with my fellow PhD researchers this week and I wanted to drop some useful resources here:
This one is a Nature article, but some of these principles still hold for the figures in general.
This piece from the Molecular Ecologist is on colour palettes and how to pick one. This one is from Fabio Crameri.
I personally use Canva for tweaking my figures and adding some more complex graphics (it’s a shame they didn’t make me their brand ambassador yet), but you can also use SciDraw to download free biology-related high-quality drawings.
If you are very devoted to making your figures from scratch, you can use RAWgraphs or Inkscape.

Thanks Scott! I've heard about BioRender, but that was one of the reasons why I didn't go for it :/
This is brilliant! Thanks - do you know of BioRender? I started using it recently but then found out it's a paid service to get publishing rights of the figures/images.
